Not all scratches are equal — and knowing what you are dealing with determines whether this is a DIY job or needs a professional.
How Deep Is Your Scratch?
Car paint has three layers: primer, base coat (color), and clear coat. The depth of the scratch determines how it is fixed:
- Clear coat scratch — Does not penetrate to color. Looks white or silver. Most common. Can often be polished out.
- Base coat scratch — Penetrates clear coat and shows color change or bare primer. Needs professional treatment.
- Primer scratch (deep scratch) — Down to metal. Needs touch-up paint and professional refinishing.
How to Test Scratch Depth
Run your fingernail lightly across the scratch. If your nail catches in it, it is too deep for polish alone. If your nail slides across it, it may be a surface clear coat scratch that polishing can address.
DIY Clear Coat Scratch Repair
Light clear coat scratches respond to polishing compound applied by hand or machine. Products like Meguiar’s ScratchX work on very light surface marks. For machine polishing, incorrect technique can cause more damage — proceed carefully.
When to Call a Professional
Any scratch that exposes color, primer, or metal needs professional treatment. Trying to polish a deep scratch just removes surrounding clear coat without fixing the scratch.
