Before you get your windows tinted in Kansas City, you need to know Missouri’s tint laws. Getting it wrong means fines, failed inspections, and having to redo the job.
Missouri Window Tint Laws (2024)
Missouri follows these limits on Visible Light Transmission (VLT) — the percentage of light allowed through the tint. Higher % = lighter tint.
Passenger Vehicles
- Windshield: Non-reflective tint on top 6 inches only
- Front Side Windows: Must allow 35%+ light transmission (35% VLT or lighter)
- Rear Side Windows: Any darkness allowed
- Rear Window: Any darkness allowed
SUVs and Vans
- Windshield: Non-reflective tint on top 6 inches only
- Front Side Windows: Must allow 35%+ light transmission
- Rear Side Windows: Any darkness allowed
- Rear Window: Any darkness allowed
Common Tint Percentages Explained
- 5% (Limo Tint) — Very dark, legal on rear windows only in MO
- 20% — Popular for rear windows, gives excellent privacy
- 35% — The legal limit for Missouri front windows
- 50% — Light tint, provides heat/UV rejection without darkening much
- 70% — Nearly clear — great for windshield safety film
The Reflectivity Rule
Missouri also limits how reflective tint can be. Front and rear windows cannot be more than 35% reflective. Highly metallic or mirror-finish tints are not legal on Missouri roads.
